Carrying the Legacy Forward

Gillespie V. "Sonny" Montgomery was destined for a life in the military and in politics.

After serving in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, Sonny retired from the Mississippi National Guard as a Major General in 1980.

He eventually became the U. S. Congressman to author the law that bears his name, the "Montgomery GI Bill".  His tireless efforts to defend our military and our veterans resulted in him being known as "Mr. Veteran".

Sonny became involved in the Trail of Honor event in 2003 as the event's first keynote speaker and his legacy is carried forward with the ongoing support of the G. V. "Sonny" Montgomery Foundation.
