Civil War Era

United States Civil War 1861-1865

The American Civil War (1861 - 1865) was one of the most violent times in the History of the United States. Many books have been written on all aspects of the Civil War. More than 600,000 men gave their lives for their country in this war. This is more lives lost in one war than in all wars and conflicts combined following this period in time.

Vicksburg Refugee

During the 47-day siege of Vicksburg, Federal gunboats and artillery kept a constant rain of shells falling into the city. Many citizens had caves dug into the hills and bluffs and moved their families into them in order to escape this deadly situation. This lady, whose husband is an officer in the Confederate Garrison, has left the city and made camp in the woods. Her husband has secured a tent, and whatever he could get, to make her as comfortable as possible.
